Farflung Friends

While the rules are very strict and you can't take part in the competition unless you are in the UK or Channel Islands we have always turned a blind eye to the few enthusiasts across the globe who sign up for the competition. Over the years we have had a number of schools across Europe, the Middle East, the Far East and the Americas taking part and this year we welcome teams from the following schools:

Chambersburg Area Middle School from Pennsylvannia

   Punahou High School from Hawaii

   Fremont High School, Florida

   Harrow International, Bangokok

   British School, Tokyo

People from the department spend a lot of time travelling so if you are thinking of studying in the UK and would like a visit from one of us, let us know.

Meanwhile, welcome to the National Cipher Challenge wherever you are from, it is great to have you here.

Tokyo Broadcasting System

We just received a request from Peter Harrold of the Tokyo Broadcasting System to hook up with schools to do a piece on codebreaking, Bletchley, GCHQ and Bond. They are the oldest and largest independant broadcaster in Japan so this is quite a coup and it would be great to find a school keen to be involved. Do get in touch with him if you are interested. A reminder that we are looking for schools to get involved not individual teams, so please talk to your teachers first. All the best, Harry

To whom it my concern,

My name is peter and I am an assistant news producer for Japan’s oldest and largest independent broadcast network.

After watching William Hague’s speech at Bletchley Park yesterday, I  decided it would be interesting to do a report on the University of Southampton’s National Cipher Challenge, possibly tied in with a report on GCHQ’s new policies on recruiting the next generation of James Bond!

I would really appreciate it if the person or persons in charge of the Cipher Challenge could get in touch with me.  My details are at the bottom of this message.

Thank you for your time,

Yours faithfully,

Peter Harrold

The Huts

The Huts will open for business today. You will need a password to find out which Hut you have been allocated to, and if all goes according to plan we will have a very special guest announce that password at Bletchley this afternoon. Keep an eye out on the news and info page and on the forums for any information about this. Harry

To everyone else, there is always next week.

This week we also ran a movie competition, to make a short youtube video designed to attract new people to the challenge. We had just two entries, and they were sufficiently idiosyncratic that we couldn't decide on a winner so have instead split the prize and award £50 to each of the two schools. You can see their cinematographic masterpieces here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAeWWKPmLeo&feature=autoplay&list=UURT-dV0kjRZKdqbVR89Br2A&playnext=1

We invite both groups to contact us in order to claim their prizes!

We would like to put a movie on the resource page which shows a school maths (or cipher) club working on the challenge so that teachers can see what is involved. Maybe with some comments from a teacher or from members of a team about what they get out of doing the competition. No prizes for this, but if anyone wants to put something together for us to use we could let your local press know about it as well so your school maths department would get some good publicity.

Good luck with Challenge 2, hope you like it,

Harry
